My friend introduced me to Baby Sign Language, in the UK, when my daughter was nearly a year old. It was great being able to sit her in front of the TV for half an hour while I got those dirty dishes done! She would sit mesmerized by the actions and little ones singing and dancing on the TV.
After a couple times listening to the songs and hearing her little excited yelps, I thought – I wonder what this is like? So one day I sat with her and watched! It was amazing how my daughter would look at me as if to say ‘See Mom, that’s what I’m trying to tell you!’. Needless to say the dishes became washed another time and I spent every night before bed watching with my little girl. It was amazing how she could communicate her needs to me just by a simple hand movement! My family were impressed that even they could understand what she wanted! By the time she was 18 months old she could say full sentences and was fully potty trained! This was when I realized the magic of Signing Time!
In 2011, I moved back to Zimbabwe and decided to study and become an instructor with The Signing Time Academy. There was nothing here that offered such wonderful assistance to our little ones to prevent those tantrums. However personal circumstances prevented me from continuing.
Now, 6 years down the line, I am BACK, committed and looking forward to starting this incredible adventure in ZIMBABWE! All the people I have spoken to seem really excited to begin heading down this path with me! I already have an awesome class of gifted children who look forward to my visit every week. They have been my inspiration! They are full of questions and it is refreshing to hear all the enthusiasm. Their talents range from Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, PTSD and even Alcohol Fetal Syndrome but they have learnt so much it makes me proud!
I am hoping to further my training to incorporate adults as I think this is such a needed form of communication for everyone. There really should be more communication in the World!!
I am excited to bring this fun filled activity to everyone and hopefully the schools will begin to incorporate it into their curriculum. Let’s change the World one SONG at a time 🙂
