Marie Guruge

I teach PreK (ages 3–5) at an international school in Japan. Sign language is a powerful tool for all children, supporting communication and language development, especially in multilingual settings. In my class, we use signs during circle time, quiet moments, and even phonics lessons. I started signing with my son at five months old. By age two, he used over 200 signs to express his thoughts before he could speak. Signing was a wonderful experience, and today he is a bilingual 10-year-old fluent in Japanese and English.

日本にあるインターナショナルスクールのPreK（3〜5歳）で教えています。手話は言葉を話す子どもたちにもとても有効で、コミュニケーションスキルアップに役立ちます。言葉が未熟な赤ちゃん期だけでなく、多言語環境で育つ子どもの言語発達にも有効です。サークルタイムや静かにする必要がある場面でもサインを使ってお話しすることができたり、Phonicsなどのスタディータイムにも使えるので、PreKクラスルールではサインが大活躍しています。

生後５ヶ月から本格的にサイン育児をはじめた息子は、2歳になるまでに２００以上のサインを使い、小さな手でたくさんのお話をしてくれました。言葉が話せるようになる前に、小さな胸はいろんな想いや発見でいっぱい！サイン育児をやって本当によかった～と感激の毎日でした。現在10歳、日本語と英語のバイリンガルに成長しました。
